Camp Juliette Low has two experienced directors, Nancy Brim and Sara Beth Hitt, who share the duties and joys of camp leadership. They work together to recruit, hire and train staff and divide the time spent at camp in the summer equally. Between the two of them, Nancy and Sara Beth have over 30 years of experience at Camp Juliette Low and have held just about every job at camp!
Nancy first came to CJL as a camper in 1979 and was a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) in 1980 and 1981. She has since served the camp in many capacities - as a counselor, song leader, ropes course director, and CIT director. Nancy has been a camp director since 1994.
A native of Atlanta, Nancy has a BS degree in Biology from the University of the South and an MA in Secondary Education from San Jose State University. When she is not at camp, Nancy lives in Atlanta with her husband, Peter Carnell, and two cats, one of whom was found at CJL during the summer of 1987. Nancy teaches chemistry at Lakeside High School, where she was recently honored with the yearbook dedication.
Besides camping, Nancy enjoys playing soccer, cooking, and gardening. She and Peter volunteer much of their time in the off-season to CJL, serving on the Camp Committee, regularly attending work weekends, and participating in special projects such as the kitchen floor installation pictured here.
Sara Beth grew up in Bristol, Virginia and came to CJL as a camper and CIT in the 1980s. She holds a BA in English from East Tennessee State University and a Masters of Arts and Teaching in Special Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Sara Beth has spent 22 summers at camp, including 16 summers on staff. Co-director since 2002, she also served as Assistant Director, CIT Director, lake director, ropes course director, and horseback director.
In December of 2007 Sara Beth and her husband Kris welcomed their daughter Mayne and the three now live with their cat Rue, and dogs Bella and Boulder in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bella comes to camp with Sara Beth and is a favorite with CJL campers! In her spare time, Sara Beth enjoys writing, climbing, skiing and especially playing with future camper Mayne.
Sara Beth has extensive outdoor leadership experience, having worked as a climbing instructor, a youth and corporate facilitator, and as a wilderness/recreation counselor. She currently teaches special education in Charlotte.
Peggy Holbrook is CJL's year-round business manager, and she spends her summers at camp along with the directors. Peggy spent her camper and CIT years at CJL, has worked for camp for 18 years, and has been the business manager for more than 10 years. Hers is the voice you hear when you call the winter office.
